Its creation dates back to 1810 and its construction was due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paris.fr\/pages\/tout-savoir-sur-les-sous-sols-2317\">inspector general of quarries<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis-%C3%89tienne_H%C3%A9ricart_de_Thury\">Mr. Louis-\u00c9tienne H\u00e9ricart de Thury<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its function is not to provide water, but to measure the height of the water table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the photo opposite, we can see a graduated scale over four meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lowest mark indicates 0 meters. This corresponds to the same level as the graduated scale of the Pont des Tournelles, the former reference point for the zero altitude of the low water of the Seine. In order to create the semi-circular coping and the steps of the fountain, a few meters further in the gallery, we find a life-size drawing, also classified as heritage. It allows us to estimate the size of the blocks needed to create the fountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tr\u00e9mery had this low-water scale carved directly into the stone, making it characteristic of the architectural style of the work undertaken in the quarries of Paris by himself. It is distinguished by its summit decorated with a small Doric capital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The mineralogy cabinet, also called a curiosity cabinet, is a place where the geological layers from the Lutetian period defined in the grounds of the Paris Basin were displayed on each step of a straight staircase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a reproduction made in 2005 by SEADACC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the ceiling, we can see a compass rose indicating the four cardinal points.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.myportfolio.com\/3a2adcd4eb371b3bfe1e9076c68d1d47\/7e8b6c84-a634-4d3b-a646-1f9eb5dd8d8d_rw_3840.jpg?h=820d6bb6bf7ace12f810a65d60313ee9\" alt=\"\" style=\"object-fit:cover\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The General Inspection of Quarries (IGC) initially had its offices in the Capuchin enclosure.
