Introduction

The Saint-Cloud limestone quarry, active in the 18th century, was dug into the hillside to a depth of about a hundred meters; its adit entrance, which still exists, facilitated the transport of materials on carts. The absence of a hard limestone quarry roof bed explains the presence of numerous sinkholes whose cavities reach an amplitude of 6 to 8 meters. It is precisely to consolidate a sinkhole, and secure the quarry as well as the road, that a specific consolidation was built below and in the axis of the street. This remarkably elaborate construction, whose height under the keystone is about 14 meters, combines elegance with technical prowess.

For fifteen to twenty years, the government has carried out considerable work there in order to consolidate the roof which threatened to collapse.
