Virtual tour of the Notre-Dame-de-Cana crypt

Notre-Dame-de-Cana is an assumed name, chosen so as not to identify the place. A crypt is a room built beneath the choir of a church or chapel, often to house relics or burials.

This one is entirely vaulted. At the far end, the choir, raised by a semicircular step, is closed off by wrought-iron grilles. Beneath the altar table lies a recumbent effigy, a reclining, draped figure. The plaster is falling away in patches and exposing the masonry.

In front of the choir, a slab has been moved, opening a void beneath the paving. On the opposite side, a narrow staircase climbs back to the surface through a door topped by an oculus.

This tour is part of the catalogue of virtual tours of underground heritage.
